Elevating Coaching, Empowering Classrooms: The Concept Schools 2026 Instructional Coaches Retreat

Great coaching thrives on connection, shared vision, and dedicated time and space to reflect. It is a discipline in and of itself, and those who are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of excellent coaching can attribute to the powerful advantages of having such wisdom within reach.

In October of 2026, Concept Schools hosted its very first Instructional Coaches Retreat, which brought together educational leaders and coaches from across our network. The goal of this gathering was to provide dedicated, protected time for our instructional leaders to collaborate, share best practices, celebrate milestones, and tackle shared challenges as a team.

At its core, the retreat was designed to strengthen our collective capacity to support teachers through effective, student-centered coaching, ultimately driving better learning outcomes for every student enrolled in our schools.

Reflecting on Three Years of Growth

This milestone event comes at a pivotal moment as Concept Schools is in its third year of implementing the Student-Centered Coaching model. Since the inception of this model, we have undertaken an expansion of coaching roles, deepened our shared understanding of high-impact coaching practices, and built robust systems to support continuous teacher development. However, as a network grows, so does the need for alignment, consistency, and collective problem-solving.

The Coaching Retreat offered participants a well-deserved opportunity to temporarily break away from the day-to-day demands of their school and intentionally focus on three critical pillars:

  • Practices: Refining tools and frameworks for maximum impact.
  • Relationships: Building trust and cross-network peer partnerships.
  • Systems: Ensuring coaching models remain impactful and sustainable for long-term planning.

Stronger Together

The power of the retreat came forth from the collaborative community of team members who were present throughout the event. This retreat brought together approximately 50 participants who represented various leadership roles across the network, including regional instructional coaches, building-level coaches, designated team leads (DTLs), and members of the Concept Schools Academic Department (CSAD)

Key Takeaways and Standout Moments

Uniting multiple distinct perspectives into one room was a purposeful undertaking. Superior instructional coaching practices rely on strong alignment and shared ownership between the coaches who work in the classrooms and alongside their communities – along with the members of leadership – to support their vision. Throughout this 2-day event, participating coaches engaged in hands-on workshops, reflective discussions, and strategic planning sessions, which included:

  • Content Alignment: Collaborating with subject-area peers to determine priority instructional practices.
  • Practical Toolkit Exploration: Analyzing actionable frameworks, like coaching rubric and time-impact reflection tools.
  • Action-Oriented Planning: Translating high-level insights directly into concrete goals and immediate action steps for their respective campuses.
  • Peer Problem-Solving: Structured discussions allowing coaches to share strategies for overcoming common day-to-day challenges.

Looking Beyond the Future

Reflecting on the event’s success, our leadership shared a vision for the future of instructional coaching across Concept Schools:

“I feel incredibly honored to have spent two days working alongside such dedicated colleagues who share a commitment to supporting teachers and improving student learning,” said Rachel Sykora, Director of Social Studies for Concept Schools, who oversaw the inaugural event. “It was inspiring to see the collaboration, reflection, and collective problem-solving that took place, and to recognize how much we've grown in our third year of student-centered coaching. When we invest in our coaches, we're ultimately investing in our teachers and students. My hope is that this retreat becomes a tradition that continues to strengthen our coaching community and the impact we have across Concept Schools.”

As the coaches return to their schools with fresh perspectives, action items, and strategies, the impact of their attendance and participation in this event will undoubtedly cascade into the classrooms and communities. Such support amongst this elite team of educators and leadership staff will only serve to empower students, and to further achieve the standards set forth by our mission.
