From September 15 to October 15, schools across the Concept Schools network celebrate students, families, and communities of Hispanic Heritage. This annual celebration of culture, history, and notable contributions from the Hispanic/Latino community recognizes the people who have added to the story of Hispanic culture in the United States.
Participation in events that pertained to Hispanic Heritage Month is open to all, though leading the efforts to empower students to celebrate their Hispanic culture is Horizon Science Academy McKinley Park Elementary school. To mark the occasion, students were treated to a very special experience that brought culture and education to the forefront, through a series of memorable events.
HSA McKinley Park launched the celebration with a live performance by local band Mariachi Perla de México, whose music filled the school with classic serenades, traditional rhythms, and incredible energy – all lunch periods participated, and students sang, swayed, and danced to the joyful music. Additionally, the students were treated with fresh and delicious churros, which made the event even more exciting.
For some of the younger learners, Principal Ak took the time to join Ms. Thurber’s 2nd-grade classroom as a guest speaker. He read the wonderful story of Pepe and the Parade, and created a scene in which the vibrant story came to life for the attentive room of young learners. Through the book, the HSA McKinley Park 2nd graders explored the energy, traditions, and colorful spirit of a community parade, getting an insider’s perspective on how different cultures come together in celebration. As a result, the students became engaged in the story; they participated, asked questions, and listened attentively as Principal Ak told the tale.
Not wanting to be outperformed, other schools participated in various showcases of Hispanic culture. Second graders at Horizon Science Academy of Lorain South learned about Frida Kahlo and celebrated the Mexican icon of art and culture by creating artworks of their own (inspired by Kahlo’s story). HSA Belmont High School celebrated with música, comida, arte, cultura, learning, activities, and lots of HSA Belmont spirit! Finally, HSA McKinley Park High School is scheduled to host a Familia Block Party on October 2nd, where the entire community is invited to an evening of music, food, dancing, activities to honor cultures, families, and unity.
The first half of the monthlong celebration of Hispanic heritage was off to a phenomenal start, honoring culture, music, traditions, and the unity found in our diverse campuses. During this time, we are reminded how we each have profound stories to tell, from various perspectives, and how our differences can be channels by which we learn more of one another.
