The Learners of Today Become the Leaders of Tomorrow
The most effective way to learn real-world applications and life/work skills is by putting forth projects that solve real-world problems. This concept is by no means lost on high school students at Horizon Science Academy (HAS) Columbus High School, who over the summer participated in the Student Tech Corps: AI Project Showcase. This 5-week program enabled HSA Columbus High students to apply their knowledge and skills in AI development within an environment reflective of professionals in the tech sector.
Tech Corps, long known as a leader in student empowerment in technology, provided a format in which students could both learn and compete. Beyond learning technical skills and applying them directly to live projects, the students also invested their efforts in the principles of team management: communication, coordination, collaboration, critical thought, and leadership. Students learned to discover best practices for working as a team while solving key problems, and then presented their solutions - both realistic and practical – to a group of various businesses and mission-based leaders.
“Our project was to create an AI chatbot for [businesses] that struggle with keeping their data collected and clean,” commented Nahom Girmay, HSA Columbus High School graduate of 2026. “We made an AI that will help them organize their data and to know what to do next with their business.”
The Student Tech Corps AI Project Showcase was possible because of a $1 Million grant from Batelle, whose investment in STEM education fosters young learners and prepares them to be the leaders of tomorrow.
