To Live Through The Unimaginable
In March of 2024, one family of Gateway Science Academy St. Louis Middle School received devastating news. Given an unimaginable medical diagnosis, three words instantly became a target to defeat: acute lymphoblastic leukemia (commonly known as A-L-L). At the time of his diagnosis, Brody was a 12-year-old dreamer who loved his hometown baseball team and yearned for a lifetime of joy, exploration, friendships, and memorable experiences. Cancer had found a way to impugn his future endeavors, and at a young age, he was placed into a situation few will ever truly understand.
The ALL form of cancer, the most common diagnosed in children, requires aggressive treatment over the course of years. In addition to chemotherapy, treatment includes scans, tests, and medications, all of which take a serious toll on a young and growing body. Brody experienced all of this, first hand. Not only was he physically exhausted from the lengthy process, his emotional state (and that of his family) made hope seem further and further away.
Despite the obstacles, despite tough days, and despite the disruption to his “normal” life, Brody never failed in his fight. His level of courage was undeterred, even as he made numerous visits to Mercy Children’s Hospital to undergo a process that many consider relentless. Brody was brave enough to push through on the good days and courageous enough to overcome setbacks on the tough days, and while he missed much of the activities and experiences of his peers, his mind was set on a clear objective: win.
Though there were reasons for distraught, there was one consistent aspect of his character that carried through: at no point did Brody ever cease to be Brody.
Two years later, Brody’s persistence (and that of his family) yielded results. In July of 2026, medical scans confirmed the news that all young patients – and their parents, loved ones, friends, and those who prayed or supported in any way – wish to hear: his treatment was complete, the cancer was gone!
Ringing the Bell
As a passionate, lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, an opportunity to conclude this experience, on a high note, came at the invitation for Brody and his family to be honored at “baseball heaven”, better known as Busch Stadium – the home of the Cardinals. This is where Brody would ring the bell of triumph, signifying the end of his crusade and of the conquest over cancer.
As he stood before thousands of fans, supporters, and the media crew who put him on the main jumbotron, the crowd awaited until the bell rang to cheer for Brody and for those who were with him along the way. Brody rang the bell with fervor, and no sound in all of St. Louis became more meaningful or more powerful. Tears of joy were shed across the stadium as thousands of onlookers celebrated the courage of this young man; they witnessed the personification of answered prayers, standing before a gateway he so bravely crossed.
The St. Louis Cardinals posted this story on their social media, which generated more than 18,000 reactions, 500 comments, and 300 shares on Facebook and Instagram.
He Did It!
Today, Brody is a 14-year-old cancer survivor who has an amazing story to tell. He may not wear a cape every day, but this alumnus of GSA Middle school is undoubtedly a hero. His story is proof that an entire community can carry a family over their devastation and onto a platform of celebration, whereby a joyous outcome is the result of perseverance over unimaginable circumstances.
We cheer and celebrate with Brody, his parents and family, and the entire GSA Community, for the life of this young man. We feel confident that Brody will make the most of every opportunity that comes his way, and we are anxious to witness a future in which he will make a tremendous impact in the lives of others.
