Chicago Math and Science Academy Named 2026 Public Charter School of the Year

Chicago Math and Science Academy (CMSA) has been recognized as the 2026 Public Charter School of the Year by Education Insider, recognizing the school’s continued commitment to student-centered learning, academic excellence, and whole-child support.

For more than two decades, CMSA has served students and families across Chicago by creating an educational environment that extends beyond academics alone. The school’s approach focuses on supporting students both inside and outside the classroom through strong relationships, STEM-focused learning opportunities, social-emotional support, and real-world preparation for life after graduation.

At the center of that work is a collaborative school culture built around communication, student support, and meaningful engagement.

“Our layered approach reflects the belief that student success is not the responsibility of a single educator, but the outcome of a collaborative institutional effort,” said Angela Huls, Principal of CMSA.

CMSA continues to prioritize opportunities that help students grow academically while also developing confidence, leadership skills, and future readiness. Through STEM programs, robotics, Project Lead The Way courses, health science pathways, internships, and career exploration experiences, students are encouraged to apply their learning in hands-on and meaningful ways.

The school also places a strong emphasis on student voice and emotional wellbeing. Counseling support, student leadership opportunities, extracurricular involvement, and consistent communication between staff and families all contribute to a school environment where students feel supported and connected.

“We believe that strong communication is the foundation for supporting the whole child,” Huls said.

In recognizing CMSA, Education Insider noted the school’s ability to combine academic rigor with emotional support, career readiness, and strong family engagement. The recognition reflects the work of students, educators, staff, and families who continue to shape the CMSA community each day.

As CMSA looks ahead, the school remains focused on continuing to expand opportunities for students while preparing them for success in college, careers, and beyond.
