GSA Student Earns Lt. Governor’s Award for American Patriotism

An eighth-grade student at Gateway Science Academy Middle School is being recognized at the state level for her writing and civic understanding.

Mia Mruckovski has been selected as a recipient of the Missouri Lieutenant Governor’s Award for American Patriotism, an honor given to students whose writing demonstrates strong civic knowledge and reflection. Her letter was chosen from more than 500 submissions as one of the top entries in the state.

Mia will be invited to the Missouri State Capitol in Jefferson City this June, where she will be recognized and have the opportunity to read her letter.

Her essay focused on her personal connection to the United States, highlighting the freedoms and opportunities she values. Drawing from her family’s experience immigrating from Eastern Europe, Mia reflected on the contrast between life in the United States and the conditions her parents faced growing up.

“I love America because we have the freedom to pursue our desires, express our thoughts, and believe in what we choose without the fear of persecution,” Mia wrote in her letter.

For Mia, the award represents both an academic achievement and a personal milestone.

“It’s really an honor to have the privilege to get to read my letter on patriotism to our Lieutenant Governor at the State Capitol,” she said. “As an aspiring writer, this opportunity has given me confidence in my abilities, and I couldn’t be more grateful to receive this award.”

Her teacher, Shaun Ballman, noted that Mia’s work reflects both her academic strengths and her perspective as a first-generation American.

“Mia embodies the spirit of the American Dream,” Ballman said. “She expresses her gratitude for being an American every day and brings thoughtful insight to discussions on foundational issues in our Early U.S. History course.”

In the classroom, Mia is known for actively engaging in discussions, leading debates, and connecting course content to real-world ideas, an approach that was reflected in her writing.

Her recognition highlights the importance of civic education and the opportunities students have to apply what they learn beyond the classroom.

Gateway Science Academy Middle School looks forward to celebrating Mia’s achievement as she represents her school at the state level this summer.
