2026 Art & Language Festival Celebrates Student Voice and Culture

CHICAGO, IL — Students from across Concept Schools came together for the 2026 Art & Language Festival, where creativity and culture took center stage.

From the moment performances began, it was clear this year’s theme, “Mosaic of Cultures,” was more than a title. It came to life through every performance as students moved between dances, and songs, representing cultures from around the world and performing in multiple languages.

For many students, that experience meant more than getting every step or note perfect.

Students from Chicago Math and Science Academy, who performed “Laamba,” spoke about what it meant to represent their culture on stage. “Be yourself. Don’t change who you are or what culture you’re from and just be present and just proud,” one student shared. They also described their school community as “diverse and… really proud to be here.”

That kind of confidence does not always come easily, especially in front of a crowd. But throughout the day, students supported one another and embraced the moment, even when it felt challenging.

A student performer from Horizon Science Academy Southwest reflected on that experience, saying, “Even if you mess up… you just have to keep going.” Another student added, “At the end of the day, we’re all winners.”

Those moments of growth were not limited to the stage.

In the visual art exhibition, students shared personal stories in quieter but equally powerful ways. Chicago Math and Science Academy student artist Usa Raza presented a charcoal piece titled Silent Screen, focused on inner struggles and mental health. Reflecting on the experience, Raza shared, “I think this is a really good spot for people who are just starting off or maybe like professionals… this is an amazing place,” and encouraged others to “just do what your heart wants.”

Behind the scenes, the event also reflected strong collaboration across schools.

Lisa Powell, Band Director at Horizon Science Academy Columbus, described the process of bringing different groups together as “this beautiful puzzle that comes together,” highlighting how events like this allow students and staff to learn from one another.

For parents in the audience, it was a chance to see their children step into confidence. For schools, it was a reflection of the diversity that strengthens their communities. And for students, it was proof that their voice, their culture and their story belong.

The event concluded with an award ceremony recognizing student performances but the overall impact extended beyond the stage. The festival continues to provide a space where students can share their work, represent their cultures and build confidence through performance and creative expression.
