For many students, writing an essay is just an assignment. For Matthew Nehre, it became an opportunity to make a real difference.
The Gateway Science Academy Middle School student has been named a Regional Finalist in the National Civics Bee, a national competition that recognizes students for their civic knowledge and their ability to develop solutions to real-world challenges. Matthew earned this distinction after submitting one of the highest-scoring essays in the region and will represent his school at the regional finals in Waynesville, Missouri, later this April.
What sets Matthew’s work apart is not only the topic he chose, but what he is doing with it.
His essay focuses on addressing poverty in St. Louis, specifically improving access to resources for individuals experiencing homelessness. Rather than stopping at research, Matthew is already putting his ideas into action.
Through his role in Student Council, he is leading an initiative to create a resource pamphlet that organizes essential information such as shelter locations, food pantries, and support services so it is easier for people in need to find and use.
Matthew is a three-year honors student who is involved in a wide range of activities at GSA Middle School, including Student Council, the National Geography & History Bee Team, Middle School Band, CYSP, and both Boys Volleyball and Soccer. His commitment to both academics and service reflects a strong sense of responsibility to his community.
Teachers describe Matthew as not only a strong student, but also a thoughtful and compassionate individual who looks for ways to make a positive impact.
As he prepares for the next stage of the National Civics Bee, Matthew’s work serves as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with a simple idea and the willingness to act on it.
