Students from Horizon Science Academy Cincinnati recently earned 1st Place at the VEX IQ Robotics State Championship, held March 2–3 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
The school’s Rock and Roll Robotics Team, consisting of Isaiah Calloway, Jerry Drew, and Romante Boykin, competed in this year’s VEX IQ robotics challenge titled “Mix and Match.” Under the guidance of Coach Zak, the students designed, built, and programmed a robot capable of sorting and scoring game elements while working cooperatively with alliance partners.
Competition Results
- 1st Place – VEX IQ Robotics State Championship

- Sportsmanship Award
The Teamwork Championship Award recognizes the highest-scoring collaborative performance during the robotics challenge, emphasizing effective coordination between alliance teams. The team also received the Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes professionalism, cooperation with other teams, and positive conduct throughout the event.
Coach Zak noted that the achievement was made possible through the support of the school community. “This achievement was truly a team effort, and I’m incredibly grateful to the staff who supported our students by covering classes and allowing us time during SOAR to prepare, practice, and make this success possible,” he said.
With their state championship victory, the HSA Cincinnati team has qualified for the VEX Robotics World Championship, which will take place in April in St. Louis. The international event brings together top robotics teams from across the United States and around the world to compete and share innovations in STEM.
Congratulations to the Rock and Roll Robotics Team and Coach Zak for their performance and advancement to the next level of competition.
