HSA Denison Middle Drone Teams Qualify for Regional Championship

Students from Horizon Science Academy Denison Middle recently participated in two North Central Region Aerial Drone Competitions, earning several recognitions and qualifying for the upcoming regional championship.

Under the guidance of coach Mr. Matur, two HSA Denison drone robotics teams competed in events held across Ohio over the past two weekends. Throughout the competitions, students demonstrated their ability to program autonomous flight paths, complete precision flight challenges, and collaborate effectively under pressure. 

The students representing the school included Atnel, Sebastian, Darius, Mac, Christopher, and Ayreem.

Competition Results

February 21, 2026 – Mahoning Valley Aerial Drone Competition (Canfield, OH)

  • Teams 49120A and 49120B advanced to the semifinal round in elimination matches.

February 28, 2026 – Miami Valley Aerial Drone Competition (Xenia, OH)

  • 3rd Place Overall Skills – Team 49120A (Score: 215)
  • Top 10 Skills Finish – Team 49120B (Score: 190)
  • 2nd Place – Autonomous Flight Skills
  • Airmanship Award recognizing professionalism, safety, and teamwork

The Autonomous Flight Skills category evaluates teams on their ability to program drones to complete a flight course without manual control. The Airmanship Award recognizes teams that demonstrate professionalism, safe operation, and strong collaboration during the competition.

Based on their performance, both teams have qualified for the North Central Middle School Regional Championship, which will take place May 15–16, 2026 at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan.
