Last weekend, a group of students from across the Concept Schools network boarded flights to Nashville for an unforgettable two-day HBCU college tour. Organized every year by Concept, the annual trip was designed to give students meaningful exposure to Tennessee State University and Fisk University, two historic institutions rooted in academic achievement and cultural pride.
For the trip's organizers, the goal was simple: create opportunities for students to explore high-quality post-secondary options where they can thrive.
“College visits like our HBCU trip are essential because they give students firsthand exposure to college campuses, academic expectations, and student life,” Concept Schools Director of College Readiness and Career Success Sam Davis said. “For many students, especially first-generation and underrepresented groups, physically being on a campus helps them envision themselves in higher education in a way no presentation or brochure can. These trips build confidence, provide cultural and historical context, and strengthen motivation as students prepare for life after high school.
“By visiting institutions like Tennessee State University and Fisk University, students not only learn about admissions and opportunities but also experience the supportive, community-centered environment that HBCUs are known for.”
Across two packed days, students participated in admissions presentations, walked through campus landmarks, enjoyed dining halls, learned about student organizations, and connected directly with university staff. They also took part in team-building activities and a guided tour of downtown Nashville.
For many students, traveling solo was its own milestone. Their first time navigating an airport and flying independently sharpened their confidence before they even stepped foot on a college campus.
But the most powerful moments came once they arrived. Students spoke about feeling proud, energized, and deeply connected after seeing Black excellence celebrated everywhere they went. The welcoming communities at both Fisk and TSU made a lasting impact. From vibrant sports programs to historic buildings to student-centered support systems, each campus showed them what a nurturing and empowering college environment can look like.
