Know what I get to do? I get to teach at Horizon Science Academy with super kids, great teachers, and a fantastic administration! Hopefully, I am making a difference in the lives of my students just as much as they are making in mine. This is my sixth year teaching at Horizon and I hope to be able to hang my hat here for many years to come. I firmly believe it is my calling in life to give all of my students a chance to succeed, the same chance I received as a child. I consider myself blessed to work with an administration that allows me to be as creative as I want with my language arts lesson plans. Further, I feel very fortunate to work with an administration this supportive of all of their teachers. I am surrounded by teachers who are both committed and dedicated to their students and who care about each child’s individual success. I’m one of those few people in life who gets to wake up every morning and say that they honestly love their job. My students are my motivation and my drive to succeed as their teacher. I’m at a point in my life where I don’t need this job, I want this job. After nineteen years as a secretary to the police chief, I resigned to pursue a teaching career. Although it was a very difficult decision to forego a well-paying job and to put off retirement I can honestly say that it is a decision that has reaped huge benefits to me.

Anne Kline, Teacher

Horizon Science Academy provides a caring and nurturing environment, where we watch our students excel in math, reading, science, social studies, foreign language, and the arts. I have been a part of the Horizon family for six years now, and I can honestly say that our students enjoy attending school, which is a testament to the hard-working staff and the continuous improvements that are being made in our school. Here at Horizon, we always encourage parents/guardians to get involved in their child’s education.  They can come in and observe classes, sit in on our grade chair meetings, contact us via phone or e-mail, or set up a conference and speak with us in person. Horizon is a safe, warm, and friendly school. We are privileged to work in a multi-cultural environment, where the children are exposed to the world and the various cultures within it. Teachers are very dedicated, highly educated, and able to adjust to children’s needs for growth.

April Maimone, Teacher

This is my second year here at Horizon Science Academy.  In the time that I have spent here I have witnessed a very dedicated group of teachers.  Some teachers arrive at the crack of dawn and others stay until the sun goes down.  They all seem to have the same objective to give the best possible education to the students so they can succeed.  It does not take long for people to see how the kids respond.  The students are very productive young men and women.  Whether it is inside the classroom or in one of the many competitions the teachers’ hard work is constantly paying off.  I believe that the parents have made a great choice for their children’s education.  I enjoy coming to work every day knowing I am going to be a part of something as positive and successful as Horizon Science Academy Middle School.

Peter Blazey, Teacher

This is my fifth year working at Horizon Science Academy, and I hope to be a part of this team for many more years to come.  I have taught grades 5-8, as well as both math and language arts, and am currently working in administration.  I love the support that we get from our administration here and the freedom to try new things to make sure that our students succeed.  I absolutely love our students, and they are my motivation for continuing to drive over 30 miles in each morning everyday.  It is a great feeling to wake up in the morning and look forward to coming in to work.  Not many people can say that, and I am very lucky that I can.

Melissa Haines, Teacher

As the Spanish teacher at Horizon Science Academy, I have been very impressed with the work atmosphere.  I thoroughly enjoy the relationships with my coworkers.  I think most of the time we are like family, not acquaintances or “work” friends.  My relationship with my coworkers carries on into my personal life, which means a lot to me, and I believe it says a lot about the teachers here.  I think administration at the school caters to what the teachers need to do to improve the classroom setting.  Discipline in the classroom is much more firm this year, and the students seem to be taking their consequences seriously.  Additionally, it seems like parents are very supportive, which a huge help for teachers is in order to maintain classroom structure.  I definitely look forward to a great school year.

Shannon Mitchell, Teacher

I have been working at Horizon Science Academy since January 2009.  In the time that I have been here, I have learned that the most valuable asset at this school is the staff.  I have never worked in a school where the staff bonds as well as they do here.  I think the people in this school don’t just consider each other “co-workers”; I think we consider each other friends and family.  Our staff, being so small, gives us all a chance to get to know one another.  We all work together so well and take a genuine interest in each other’s lives.  In schools I have worked at in the past, some of the staff was so large that building relationships like we have here was impossible.  One benefit of our close-knit staff is how we are able to share our lessons and ideas.  This allows us to build upon those ideas together as a team to create even more powerful ideas.  The success of any school depends on having a successful staff. I honestly believe that we have that here. I am truly honored to be a part of this team.

Stacy Ans, Teacher

This is the beginning of my sixth year of working at Horizon Science Academy.  I enjoy working with the staff and administration because everyone is willing to work together for the best interests of the students. The teachers are dedicated to the well-being of all students.  Several teachers arrive early, work late, and come into school on the weekends so that they can support our students at athletic events and academic competitions.  Teachers also take students on numerous after-school and weekend field trips so that students can experience different things such as Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, Football Hall of Fame, Motown Museum, Robotics, Future City, Maltz Museum, etc. The administration is willing to work with the teachers to make the school welcoming to students while the students are challenged academically.  The teachers and the administration have a common goal for all of our students, which is a 100% high school graduation rate and college acceptance rate for all of our students.  I enjoy teaching our students the knowledge that they need to enjoy a successful future.  I also enjoy supporting students at sporting events, math Olympics, science fairs and, spelling bee competitions.  There is nothing better than seeing the excitement in the students’ faces when they win awards for competitions and events in which they are participating. I plan of on spending numerous more years teaching and supporting the students at Horizon and watching the students become successful adults.

Nicole Kratz, Teacher

I am the Kindergarten teacher at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School.  I have been teaching here for four years. I wanted to take the time to express my gratitude towards Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School.  I was a teacher here the first year that Horizon Elementary School opened.  I have watched this school improve more and more every year.  This school has improved in the areas of academics, structure, and faculty involvement.

I feel that this school does its best to provide each student with a quality education.  They encourage their students to strive for success in everything they do.  They also make sure they reward the students who did their best and encourage every student to try and do better the next time.  Horizon Science Academy provides the students with the materials they need to achieve success.  They provide any materials that a teacher may need in order to help their students succeed.

In addition to providing quality education, Horizon also has an excellent faculty.  Everyone works together to help each other out.  At work it almost feels like you are with your family.  Everyone gets along and genuinely cares about the well being of their co-workers.  Horizon also does a good job of getting faculty involved outside of school.  We do several things outside of school such as faculty lunches or dinners, scrap booking sessions, as well as several team-building activities.

Horizon is truly a fun place to be.  There are not many people that can say they are excited to come to work everyday, but if you are a member of the Horizon community you are happy to come to work and school everyday.  I am thankful that I found such a great place to be.

Mrs. Amy Dackiewicz, Kindergarten Teacher

When I first came to Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School three years ago, I was immediately filled with a wonderful feeling of learning, compassion, and success upon entering the front doors.  That feeling has continued to grow as the faculty, staff, and students make greater strides in education.  In fact, being at HSACES is like riding on an airplane.

As students check-in their tickets (or apply to our school), they are greeted by Miss Rachel, our secretary, who is there to help with any need that may arise.  They then board the airplane, are guided to their seats (classrooms) and are given knowledge and safety procedures by the flight attendants (our teachers).  All along the way, out students are guided by our pilot and co-pilot, Mr. Hakan and Mr. Torres, who help our school to run smoothly and challenge us to accomplish even greater heights.  Our students are able to apply their knowledge as they reach their destination, accomplishing their goals.

I suppose this metaphor could be applied to almost any school, but the difference between HSACES and other schools is that we seat every student in first class.  We strive to give every student an education that will not only prepare them to live successfully in society, but will also help them to excel.  This extra measure of confidence and encouragement pushes our students on to create their own dreams and gives them the tools to succeed.  This nurturing, supporting atmosphere is the same feeling anyone who enters our building will be experience.  It is the feeling of hope and potential for our students.

The parents, teachers, students, administrators, and staff at HSACES are all united with the same goal: making a difference for the future.  I hope you will be inspired to do the same!

Christi Flick, Language Arts/Social Studies Teacher

I have been employed at Horizon Science Academy Schools since the school year 2007-08.  Currently, I serve as Dean of Students at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School (HSACES), and it’s been an enormous joy and pleasure.  At HSACES, I am elated to have joined a team of competent and dedicated team of teachers and staff that are caring, eager and prepared to provide the best possible learning experiences to all students.

At our school, we offer a variety of activities and incentives to motivate our students throughout the year.  We have numerous clubs, after school tutoring, educational field trips, before and after school care, Science Fairs and Saturday school.  In addition, we hold ongoing award ceremonies to honor our students for their academic achievements, attendance, good behavior, most improved and effort.

Our Director has shown notable ability for curriculum planning and implementation. Teachers follow a high-quality academic and rigorous instructional program of study. To support curricula, teachers are equipped with state of the art technology and teaching tools such as Star Boards in every classroom, Projectors, Computer Lab with up to date software and Science Lab. At HSACES, every member of the faculty shows a genuine love and respect for all our wonderful students.  Our commitment to their educational success is vital.

Ramon Torres, Dean of Students

I am a teacher at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School (HSACES).  This is a place where your students can learn and succeed.  We are a small school allowing staff to personally know the students and their family members.  HSACES has recently put Smart Boards into the classrooms, allowing learning to be interactive.  Here at HSACES we offer clubs and tutoring after school, we have fundraisers, and hold award ceremonies, honoring our students and their accomplishments.

The teachers and staff are dedicated to making sure that we educate and offer opportunities to our students to allow them to become active members of society.  Not only do we teach academics but we also teach the students how to work with each other, how to get along with others, and how to positively cooperate in the classroom. Horizon Science Academy offers many opportunities for students to get the best possible education they can receive.

Jessica Deininger, Teacher

My name is Jennifer McQueen. I am the custodian at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School. Let me start by saying I have been working in the school system for over 16 years. I have been employed  with Concept School System since December of 2005 . During this time, I have been blessed to meet some nice people whom I have grown to love. We are a team at my school, and we all work together to make the environment conducive for learning. It is so rewarding for me to be part of a school system that has expanded so much. Every year I see growth and progress.  Our school is so beautiful in appearance and I’m not just saying that because I maintain it. We have the best of everything for our children, including Smart Boards in every classroom. Our children will be ready for the future because the teachers are true educators; they are extremely dedicated and this is the best recipe for our leaders of tomorrow. The children are very proud of their school. Even the kindergarten children skip through the hall at times and their little faces are so happy. I save the best for last. The Director is awesome because I know that he appreciates and respects each and every individual in that building. He treats us all very well, and he rewards the children for their efforts and inspires them to achieve at high levels. I think that’s great, and it takes a great leader to have a great team. I love going to work, and I am so happy to know in my heart that I am making a contribution.

Jennifer McQueen, Staff

One of the reasons that I enjoy working at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary is that we all work together; we are like one big family. We are all here for the same purpose, which is for the children. We all work together to make sure that the children are in a safe and positive environment. We encourage the parents to take part in school field trips and school activities with the children. I’m coming up on my 4thschool year here at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School and there is no where else that I rather be, than working here.

Mrs. Rachel, Teacher

I am proud to be a teacher at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary.  This is my third year teaching here, and every year gets better!  We are one big happy family!  We have get-togethers and potlucks with our staff and we do home visits with our students.  Our students are rewarded for their good behavior and Merit Roll and Honor Roll with Horizon bucks, which they can use to buy cool gifts!  Students have great opportunities for extracurricular activities by joining clubs we offer after school.  We also offer tutoring two days a week after school for students who need extra help.  With all these great reinforcements it’s no wonder that our students are so successful in their academics!  Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary definitely has TEAM spirit!  Together Everyone Achieves More!

Mrs. Gedney, Teacher

I am writing this letter to express my deepest appreciation and dedication to Horizon Science Cleveland Elementary. As a first-year teacher, my job has its overwhelming days, but I am certain that I would not have had such a terrific start if it was not for the staff, students, and parents at HSCE. From the moment I walked in the door, everyone has been eager to help me get settled. The whole school embodies a “servant” attitude. It is clear that the mission here is to provide a high-quality academic and social environment. To obtain that mission, staff and parents step in to help each other become their best. I was surprised by how willing teachers and administrators were to help with my room step-up, development of curriculum, and classroom management strategies. With their help this has been a terrific start to my first year. I consider it a great honor to work in a school that not only “speaks” of their mission, but actually carries it out daily.

Thanks HSCE for all your love and support!!!

Go Hawks!

Mrs. Davis, Teacher

In my fifteen years of teaching I have never taught in a school like this one.  I have a real sense of pride when I get a class at the beginning of the year and see how they develop.  This school offers the community a great opportunity to give the kids a sound foundation to their education.  We have a very strong team of teachers that do an impeccable job at bringing out the best in the kids.  There is no better feeling than to see the children succeed and know that I was a part of the success.  As a teacher I am just one part of the equation.  It’s the parents who have dedicated themselves to their child’s education that helps make us strong.  These last few years here at Horizon Science Academy Elementary School have been some of my favorite years as a teacher.

Mrs. Blazey, Teacher

I am a Third Grade Teacher at Horizon Science Academy Cleveland Elementary School. I have been a member of our staff since the 2009-2010 school year. I share in our mission of our school, which is to provide a high quality academic and social environment focused on rigorous instruction and high student expectations with an emphasis on science, math, and technology through planning, ongoing reflections, collaborative planning, data analysis, family involvement and professional development. We accomplish this mission in several ways. First, we have added Smart boards to our classroom, which has truly transformed my lessons. I have noticed it has allowed more active involvement in our daily lessons and allows our students to be engaged in their learning. Another way in which we accomplish our mission is through home visits. I have had the wonderful opportunity to spend time at many of my students’ homes and get to know them better outside of the school setting. It has strengthened my relationship with my students and their families.

Each of these ideals has worked to create a positive and engaging learning environment for our students.
