This Week in STEM: New Year, New Horizons in STEM

Happy New Year! We hope you all had some time to relax and recharge over the last few weeks. We’re ready and excited to jump into 2018, starting with the first installment of this year’s This Week in STEM.

At Concept Schools, we get a little bit excited about all things related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We always keep an eye out for what’s going on in STEM in the news. Each week we will share what we think is awesome and worth learning about.

There are many more amazing things going on in STEM than we have shared, so leave a comment with your favorite STEM news from this week.

Meet 2018’s Girl of the Year Doll

American Girl has a tradition of releasing a ‘Girl of the Year’, and this year’s doll is Luciana Vega, an 11-year-old from Chile who is an aspiring astronaut. In addition to her space suit, there are a series of accessories to accompany the doll and her stories, including a Maker Space.

Natural Disasters in 2017 Cost a Record-High $306 Billion in the U.S.

This last year has been difficult on the U.S., with disasters like Hurricane Harvey and numerous wildfires. While the record-high costs are not directly linked to global warming, recent studies have found that extreme heat, wildfires, and rainfall events are much more likely and severe because of climate change.

Hello ,

I saw your tweet about animals and thought I will check your website. I like it!

I love pets. I have two beautiful thai cats called Tammy(female) and Yommo(male). Yommo is 1 year older than Tommy. He acts like a bigger brother for her. 🙂
I have even created an Instagram account for them ( https://www.instagram.com/tayo_home/ ) and probably soon they will have more followers than me (kinda funny).

I have subscribed to your newsletter. 🙂

Keep up the good work on your blog.
