HSA SPRINGFIELD MOTIVATES STUDENTS FOR STATE TEST

The younger students at Horizon Science Academy Springfield prepared a motivating celebration throughout the school's hallways. Older students walked down the halls filled with cheering 'fans' on their way to take the Ohio state test and were treated like celebrities.

STUDENT TALENT GROWS WITH BEST ART SHOW YET
Student artists impressed the public with their incredible artistic and creative expression during the Concept Schools Art Fair exhibition at the Columbus Metropolitan Library in Ohio. Throughout May, the young artists' work is on display, and students enjoyed a reception and awards ceremony on May 11th. The organizer from the Metro Library commented that they have had some good shows in the past, but the Concept Art show was by far the best they have displayed.

READING PROGRAM INVOLVES COMMUNITY AT HSA- COLUMBUS ELEMENTARY

Horizon Science Academy Columbus Elementary School caught the attention of NBC News with their impactful community reading program.  The school invites parents, politicians, community members, and local celebrities into the school to read every day to students.  Senator Cliff Hite, pictured, recently read to a class and supported the reading initiative.

Senator Hite comments that "If kids don't know how to read by the end of third grade, their chances of doing well later on in education and in life are much less."  Horizon's reading program enforces the importance of lifelong reading with this unique, meaningful literacy experience.

INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS: HSA CLEVELAND HIGH

William Stark from Horizon Science Academy Cleveland High School won the silver medal in the environmental category at the prestigious international project Olympiad, I-SWEEEP, on May 11, 2013 in Texas.

Stark's project explored energy production by using bacteria in dual chamber fuel cells. Congratulations to William and HSA Cleveland High School science teachers.

MSS COMES OUT VICTORIOUS AT ENERGY CHALLENGE

18 teams participated in the MN Renewable Energy Challenge, offered by High Tech Kids and the Kid Wind Project. In this program, teams constructed small wind turbines where they were scored on design and energy output in a wind tunnel.  The Minnesota School of Science's Shockwaves team won 3rd place overall with their incredible design on the 'Eagle Wings' turbine they created.

MSS operates in a district facility where previously only failure existed. MSS now competes and wins science competitions in the same community where the science proficiency was only 3%.

STUDENTS IMPRESS WITH A MOUTH FULL OF WORDS
The 2013 Spoken Word Competition demonstrated a tremendous voice of our youth. The Mouth Full of Words' overall winner, Marlene Mayren from IMSA West, is a veteran of this competition. Over the years, her voice has grown stronger and her words more precise in expressing her hopes and dreams. The event develops every year with eager, new competitors joining the many veteran students who realize their voices can be heard. For the complete list of winners, please click here.

PROMISING PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM THE HORIZONS

Horizon High Schools in Ohio recently received their preliminary results for the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGT).  The OGT ensures that students who receive a high school diploma demonstrate at least high school levels of achievement and measures content levels that students must master by the end of 10th grade. We congratulate our students and schools for their hard work.

BEST PRACTICES
Mrs. Ozkaya's 7th grade science class at Gateway Science Academy created cell models and then got a tasty, scientific treat- a cell cake!  Though it may have looked like just a cake, students knew it was a representation of a cell, complete with a big chocolate nucleus in the middle. Students identified the rest of the components of a cell in a memorable, enjoyable educational experience.

The Illinois Department of Transportation visited math classes at Quest Charter Academy to provide an engaging and interactive project related to bridge building, design, and most importantly, math. After the engineers presented information on bridge design, they designed a bridge structure using gumdrops and toothpicks. Students were highly engaged and competitive when the bridges were "tested" for strength by the engineers.
