Concept Spotlight: Indiana School Offers Parent University

One of the crucial aspects of student achievement and success is parent involvement. We see great work being done across the Concept Schools network, and this month we want to shine a spotlight on Indiana Math and Science Academy West (IMSA). As a part of their commitment to empowering students and parents, IMSA has created Parent University: a community collaborative led by the school to help parents become fully participating partners in their children’s education.

The Parent University partners with IMSA staff, community partners, and area organizations to offer learning sessions, activities, and family events that equip parents with new skills, knowledge, resources, and confidence. Sessions have covered everything from school orientation and Concept SIS to state assessments and homework with technology. As IMSA’s Parent University enters its second year, they are planning future sessions to include:

  • English Language Learner classes
  • Personal growth courses
  • Health and wellness
  • Parenting awareness
  • Social Emotional Learning

Parents are encouraged to attend a set number of classes in order to graduate from Parent University with a certificate that can be used toward their personal pursuit of a job or personal development.
